Jeff Stevenson offers these words of encouragement: “It’s never too late to start piping and it’s never too late to pick up the pipes again.” Jeff took a 16-year hiatus from playing his pipes because of the demands of working for the FBI and later at Google. Now he works from home (mostly) in the field of computer security and his neighbors get to enjoy hearing beautiful pipe music in the afternoon—whether they want to or not!

Jeff began his musical journey as a trumpet player throughout school, but when he went to The Citadel, he wanted to do something different and unique, so he asked Pipe Major Sandy Jones if he could be a part of the Citadel Pipe Band. Jeff feels fortunate to have started the pipes PM J Sandy Jones as well as other pipe teachers over the years including Hamilton Workman, Colin MacClellan, and Ed Neigh. A peak experience as a piper was being the Pipe Major for The Citadel at the 1991 Royal Edinburgh Tattoo (Jeff is seen below at Edinburgh Castle in the center of the Citadel pipe band leadership from that year). After school and while stationed in Charleston with the Navy, Jeff was present during the formation of the Charleston Police Pipes and Drums in the early 90s.

Jeff appreciates the lifelong endeavor that is pipe playing and also the opportunity to make music and interact with the amazing community of pipe band musicians.
