About the CPB Teaching Program

The band maintains a teaching program as the primary method of recruiting and developing beginning players of the pipes and drums.

  • Schedule:
    • Semesters are Jan-Apr, May-Aug, Sep-Dec
    • New classes begin first week of each semester
    • Lessons are the first hour of band practice, unless otherwise specified by instructor
  • There are 3 piping levels for students to progress through:
    • Beginner piping (no experience up to starting tunes)
    • Intermediate piping (starting tunes up to transitioning to pipes)
    • Advanced piping (learning the pipes until ready to perform)
  • There are 2 drumming levels for students to progress through:
    • Beginner drumming (learning rudiments and music reading)
    • Advanced drumming (learning sets)
  • Costs:
    • Students are considered associate members. Associate member dues are $150 per year. Family dues are $200 for an immediate family unit (it pays to bring a parent/child/spouse!)
    • Potential students may take up to 2 free lessons before paying dues
    • Minors who complete their training with us and continue to play Pipes/Drums in a university ensemble are eligible for a one-time scholarship in the amount of one year of student dues
    • Students will have to buy their own practice instrument (chanter or pad) and tutor book. Other exercises and music are provided.

Join us, or Learn to play

The Charleston Pipe Band is a volunteer band comprised musicians of all levels. We are always on the lookout to welcome new members, teach people and foster musical growth.

All you need is a desire to learn, practice and participate in competitions and events.

If you do already play the pipes or drums, we would love to have you join us at rehearsal sometime, get in touch to make sure you know the music on our setlist.

If you do not already play the pipes or drums, we offer a rotational learning program for interested beginners to learn how to play the instrument of their choice.

In either case, fill out the form on our contact page and let us know you're interested!
